Timeline

My Life in the 1990s

During the 1990s, I continued to work for the U.S. Air Force as the Total Quality Manager for the SDI Programs.

Then in 1992, I quit my job, our family left Los Angeles and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My wife and I bought a home in Elm Grove.

I tried to start a business advising in ISO 9000, but I was unsuccessful.

I did get teaching jobs at the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and the Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC).

Then I started getting Computer-Based Training contracts though my independent business, Kurtus Technologies.

1990

In 1990, I made some presentations and continued to publish the SDI Programs (CN) TQM newsletter.

In February, I presented a paper at the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Western Conference in Long Beach, CA on:

TQM in the Development of Communications and Electronics in the Air Force's Space Based Interceptor Program (web page with details)

Then in March, I took a one-week TQM training seminar, held by W. Edwards Deming. The Air Force paid the $1000 fee for the seminar. Deming required 1000 people, such that he made a big hunk of change for the session. He was around 80 years old at the time.

Although I had a good job with the Air Force that was also close to home, Eleanor had to drive across Los Angeles every day to work at Cal State-LA. Also, the management at Cal State were not nice. We were also concerned about Laura growing up in the LA environment. Finally, my mother was elderly and now in a nursing home. Because of these reasons, we decided to move to the Milwaukee area.

We sold our house on Stewart Avenue in Westchester, CA (suburb of Los Angeles) and moved to Elm Grove, WI (suburb of Milwaukee), where we bought a house.
